Legacy impact can best be summed up by Jim Kouzes & Barry Posner in their insightful work "A Leader's Legacy" - the legacy you leave is the life you lead. So the relevant questions for consideration now are “how are you spending your dash?” and more importantly “how meaningful is your dash?” Perhaps even more important is the question “what would other people say about how you have spent your dash?’ The answers to these questions begin to unveil an important element of our life's journey – that being the importance of one’s legacy. “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” Pericles It’s important to realize how special our dash really is and purposefully reflect upon the final question that The Dash poem asks us to consider - “am I proud of my dash?” Our dash is an obligation that we should never take for granted, because we are only given one - and as John Ortberg puts it - there are no dash do-overs in our precious lifetime. Our dash can never truly be measured in such terms as time, effects, or possessions but rather by the excellence, vitality and service that our lives represent - our dash is ultimately more of a matter of quality than quantity. Our dash symbolizes all the time that we spend alive on this earth - reflecting the total time that we have lived, loved, laughed, learned, labored, & led others. Without exception we will all have these two dates on our tombstones, but more importantly we all have our own dash as well - and what we do with our dash is up to us. Live your life in such a way so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice. "When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. ![]() The poem tells the story of a person who was speaking at the funeral of a friend - scarcely taking note of the two dates on the tombstone but instead focusing on the dash between them - for the dash is in the end what matters most.
